Chromatic aberration (colour blur) occurs in optics due to the dispersion of light and the different wavelengths of light focusing on different positions, resulting in a red or purple fringing around the image and reduced resolution.
The optimum optical material to minimise chromatic aberration is fluorite crystal. Fluorite Crystal is a natural mineral and it is extremely difficult to work with creating lengthy manufacturing processes to handle this delicate material. Creating a pure fluorite crystal lens takes specialised knowledge, skill, and costly investment.
Kowa’s flagship TSN-880 is the only spotting scope on the market to use fluorite crystal in pure form, the objective lens does not utilise glass, it is a pure piece of solid fluorite crystal.
Kowa - manufacturing perfection
Artificial fluorite crystal is grown under strict environmental conditions in cylindrical containers and is delivered to the Kowa factory ready for cutting and shaping in to a lens. The growing process can take over 18 months.
Every lens is treated with Kowa’s unique blend of coatings to enhance light transmission and resolution and the whole process is extremely delicate and complex. This technology is the result of many decades of Kowa optical design and manufacture.
